The CDC Best Practices (1999) states "Programs that successfully assist young and adult smokers in quitting can produce a quicker and probably larger short-term public health benefit than any other component of a comprehensive tobacco control program."

Since Spring 1999, we have trained over 5,000 Mississippi healthcare professionals in providing a brief intervention based on an enhanced version of the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) 5A’s curriculum, recommended in the Public Health Service Guideline (2000).

Attendees at our workshops have included professionals representing many disciplines, including:

  • medicine
  • dentistry
  • psychology
  • nursing
  • respiratory therapy
  • dental hygiene
  • occupational therapy
  • social work
  • pharmacy

Our pre-workshop surveys reveal that most providers:

  • report no prior training in tobacco intervention
  • felt unprepared to assist their patients to stop using tobacco

In contrast, post-training surveys reveal:

  • an improved preparedness to deliver services
  • an overall high degree of satisfaction with the program

Tthis 4-hour workshop includes:

  • Local and national tobacco use statistics
  • Health overview
  • Detailed review of effective intervention strategies
  • Medications review
  • Motivational interviewing techniques
  • Special population considerations
  • Systems change procedures for the clinic environment
  • PHS guideline recommendations overview
  • Provision of clinic materials (patient literature, signs, provider reference materials)

Eligibility and Application

To qualify for this training, you must be trained (or be in the process of receiving training) in any healthcare or mental health field which involves direct patient care responsibilities. If your situation does not meet this requirement but you believe extenuating circumstances exist, you may contact the ACT Center and request a waiver, subject to consideration.

Please download the Training Eligibility Form, fill it out completely, and fax it to us. If you meet enrollment criteria, we will send you a Workshop Registration Form.

At the conclusion of the workshop, you will receive a certificate of completion.

Training Goal

This workshop was developed for the purpose of educating healthcare providers regarding the nature, impact, and management of tobacco use and dependence.

Upon completion of this program, healthcare providers should consistently and routinely assess their patients for tobacco use and dependence. Further, they should offer and deliver this brief, evidence-based treatment program to facilitate their patients’ efforts to permanently quit the use of all tobacco products.
